Courage take 2nd in group at inaugural Discovery Cup
Oct 7, 2007
The FC Virginia Courage 94 girls team played in the first ever Discovery Cup tournament on Columbus Day weekend at the Maryland Soccer Plex in Boyds, Maryland. The 16-team U13 girls age group made advancement to the knock-out round extremely difficult, as each group champion would be the only one to see semi-final games. Despite two wins, one convincing 0:7 and another strong 2:1 come from behind against Long Island's Alberstson Fury, the Courage were undone by eventual group winners FC Frederick. The girls finished the weekend with 9 total goals by six different players, and some spectacular defensive play. They dominated the mid field in every game, and had several of early chances to score early against Frederick that might have changed the match.
The Courage return to WAGS play next weekend against table-toping Waldorf, where a win will pave the way to winning the division with just three games left.
