Mark Simpson joins FC Virginia training staff, will continue as D.C. United Assistant

Oct 19, 2007
South Riding, VA (October 19, 2007) - FC Virginia is proud to announce the addition of Mark Simpson to our training staff. Mark is currently an Assistant Coach for D.C. United. He is also a 3-time MLS Cup Champion goalkeeper with United - the most successful professional soccer team in United States History. He will continue his duties with D.C. United, but now will also assist FC Virginia teams and teams of affiliated clubs with training sessions and strategic direction.

FC Virginia already boasts one of the most successful youth coaches in the United States in Terry Foley, a UEFA A License holder and 23-time Virginia State Cup Champion. The addition of Simpson only ads to the compelling environment many FCV teams already enjoy. "Mark is one of the top coaches in the country, currently plying his trade every day for the best professional team in U.S. History” said Foley, who founded FC Virginia in 2006 and affiliated most of it’s teams with Chantilly Soccer Club. Foley continued “The value he brings to our club is immeasurable. His training schedule with United is very conducive to finding time to work with our teams, and we will surely put him to work right away".

Following his retirement from MLS as a player in 2001, and a one-season stint as a member of United's technical staff in 2002, Simpson took a position with the Virginia Beach Mariners. He had a tremendously successful 2003 campaign at the beach, where as an assistant coach he helped engineer an amazing turnaround season for the club. Virginia Beach followed up a 6-19-3 finish in 2002 with a 14-9-5 overall record in 2003, losing in the playoffs to the eventual champions, the Charleston Battery. He rejoined United in 2004, where he has helped the team capture the 2004 MLS Cup and back to back Supporters' Shields in 2006 & 2007. The team currently leads the league

Coach Simpson's role with FC Virginia in no way affects his career with D.C. United. Joining the FCV staff is simply an opportunity for him to become more involved with elite youth soccer training, and everyone at the club is excited for the opportunity to learn from his vast experience.

In addition to Simpson's work with FCV teams, he will also be available affiliated FCV clubs such as Chantilly Soccer Club and Fairfax Police Youth Club. Simpson has also signed on to work a series of winter soccer training camps with FC Virginia in both  Sterling and South Riding Virginia.
