Football Club Virginia (FCV)
Message from Club President, Terry Foley
January 2009
Dear FCV Family and Friends,
I am pleased to share with you several important achievements from 2008, with focus on those deserving recognition for their hard work and accomplishments. I apologize in advance for the length of this New Year’s greeting, but I think you will be interested in the Club and player information that is provided.
Most importantly, I would like to say THANK YOU to all of the FCV players, families, coaches, employees, and business partners whom have all done their part to make 2008 an exciting and fulfilling year – one that has set the groundwork for continued success and growth.
In addition to our teams’ accomplishments “on-the-field,” I am proud to share with you our business and community successes that continue to strengthen our capabilities and capacities to attract and develop outstanding youth athletes.
FCV GROWTH AND EXPANSION
Over the past 12-months, our Club has doubled in size! Measured in the numbers of players, teams, and support personnel, FCV’s reputation continues to bring talent from within the Northern Virginia area and beyond. As we expand, however, we stand firmly committed to our key strategic goals for the Club:
1) Develop scholar athletes – this is our finest area of achievement in 2008!!!
2) Build individual and team skills, allowing each player to achieve his/her greatest potential
3) Succeed at the highest levels of state, regional, and national competition
4) Provide a safe and encouraging environment for learning and development, and
5) Sustain disciplined business practices within the Club that reinforce the commitment to a low-overhead business model and full disclosure of team expenses/costs.
In April 2008, FCV was selected as the only youth soccer club in Northern Virginia to participate in the prestigious Red Bull National Girls League (RBNGL). This selection established FCV as the only area club for elite female soccer players seeking to play the best competition on a national basis. For the Fall 2008 league, FCV formed three Red Bull teams and played in U15G, U16G, and U17G age groups, while also maintaining WAGS teams in the same age groups. FCV’s Red Bull teams will compete in three National events as well as against seven other regional Red Bull clubs: Stars of Massachusetts, Connecticut Football Club (CFC), Albertson, Premier Development Academy (PDA), FC Delco, Freestate, and Virginia Rush. VA Rush is the only other club in the state of Virginia selected for Red Bull. In all, only 32 soccer clubs from around the Nation will compete in the 2008/2009 RBNGL. Other clubs in the prestigious league include CASL, Colorado Rush, Real SOCAL, Slammers, San Diego Surf, Dallas Sting, and Eclipse Select Chicago.
To support the interest in and growth of FCV, our business partners continue to make progress toward building and operating a first-class sports complex comprised of several natural grass and artificial turf fields (a draft graphic of the complex is attached). The complex will be home to FCV soccer teams and will be constructed in several phases to minimize the need for significant capital investment and debt for the Club. After a long search spanning two years, we have identified a primary site located in eastern Loudoun County near South Riding and are working diligently with the developer as well as County officials to resolve zoning, engineering, construction, and infrastructure issues. With the changing market environment, we continue to evolve our business and financial plans, as well as sponsorship and investment needs for the complex. While we are optimistic that FCV will be able to go to settlement for this 25-acre parcel, we are challenged by the continued delays we have encountered and are discussing with both Fairfax and Loudoun Counties the opportunity to establish an interim lease agreement for other field sites, pending final approval for our “ideal” location. Once this sports complex is complete (we hope to begin construction in 2009), FCV will be the only club in the area with its own dedicated sports fields and training areas. However, until we take occupancy of the FCV sports fields, we appreciate the opportunity to be affiliated with and supported by the Chantilly and Fairfax soccer clubs.
For these and the many team accomplishments identified below, I am grateful to the Club’s leadership. The coaches, staff members, and business partners providing consistent managerial support, technical expertise, and professional advice so together we are able to attract, develop, cultivate, and sustain a unique family of elite players and families. A special thanks goes to our three FCV staff members – Patty Chandler, Bookkeeper; Chris Hummer, Administrator; and Lynne McMillan, Travel Coordinator.
We will continue to add quality coaches and trainers to the FCV staff, one that I believe is the best in Virginia. Keeping outstanding coaches is a very difficult task and I want to publically thank these FCV coaches for their excellent work in 2008: Steve Smith, Tung Nyguen, Lon Pringle, Ashley Weismiller, Chris Hummer, Ben Mork, Keith Cox, Cortlyn Bristol, and Mark Simpson. Also, many of you knew Michael Needham, whom trained several of our older age group teams. Congratulations to Mike – he was recently selected to become the head coach for women’s soccer at New Mexico State University.
2008 FCV SCHOLAR ATHLETES – OUR MEASURE OF SUCCESS
I believe our greatest service to the players and families in FCV, and our finest accomplishments in 2008, center around the Club’s abilities to develop scholar athletes. This means simply providing the training necessary to give FCV players the opportunity to play at the high school and college levels and to achieve academic and athletic excellence. This begins with the proper focus on skills development and encouragement in the younger age groups, and continues on through U18, culminating in the recognition for skilled play by a college coach and an invitation to be a scholar athlete at the college level. Given this central theme for FCV, I am proud to say that every player on the FCV Netforce (U18G) team has been invited to play soccer in college on full or partial scholarship. In addition, the predecessor to the FCV Netforce, the FCV Rockets (now U19G), enjoyed the exact same test of excellence – every player on the FCV Rockets was invited to and is now playing soccer at the college level on full or partial scholarship. These FCV scholar athletes continue to be our true measure of success on and off the field, and will be the performance bar for our younger age group teams, players, and coaches.
2008 FCV and Red Bull Teams
U19 FCV Rockets (now also play as FCV Cardinals) – This team of college age young ladies won the U19 Girls Virginia State Cup and went on to play in the Regional final losing to FC Pennsylvania in the Championship match. The Netforce just returned from the Disney Showcase, the #1-ranked tournament in the world for girls youth soccer, where it lost in the semi-finals. Congratulations FCV Netforce. U17 Red Bull Fury – This team is the four-time Virginia State Cup Champion and became part of FCV to be our U17 Red Bull team. The U17 Fury has made a very strong showing by going undefeated in Raleigh at its first Red Bull event.
U16 Red Bull Explosion – This team enjoyed an excellent first season at FCV – it finished third in the WAGS High School Division and went 2-0-1 in the team’s first Red Bull event. The Explosion finished the year by making to the semi-finals in the Disney Showcase, losing to a very good Albertson NY team.
U16 FCV Courage 92 – The Courage started 2008 winning the WAGS U16 Div 2. The team then moved up to U17 Div 1, where several key injuries made the introduction to Div 1 more challenging than desired. However, by season’s end the roster was full again and the team finished strong by making it to the semi-finals of the Raleigh Final-Four Tournament. Keeping everyone healthy will be a priority in the spring!
U15 FCV Synergy – The Synergy had an outstanding 2008 - winning a number of tournaments and making to the State Cup final four for the first time. In 2008, the Synergy had an exceptional WAGS Div 1 season, and won the US Club National Championship, Greensboro Championship, WAGS Tournament Championship, and Bethesda Championship (where they beat the Virginia State Champs in the final). Congratulations Coach Steve Smith and all the Synergy players.
U14 Red Bull Hotspurs – This team is one of the newest members of the FCV family. The Hotspurs are the current Virginia State Cup Champions and have joined FCV to be part of the Red Bull Elite Club Championship. We are looking forward to seeing them represent FCV.
U14 FCV Courage 94 – During 2008 the Courage won WAGS Div 3 and move up to Div 2. Its development was also obvious in its performance in several competitive tournaments. The success of this team has drawn several new, talented players to complement those already in place and it will continue to develop during the 2009 seasons.
U11 FPYC Cannonieri – This FPYC team is now affiliated with FCV and has an excellent foundation of skilled players and a tradition of success - in its five WAGS seasons and 45 matches, it has earned a record of 40 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. In 2008, the Cannonieri won tournament Championships at the FC Delco Player’s Cup, Dulles National Soccer Tournament, and Kirkwood Girls Premier Frederick’s Cup. I look forward to coaching this highly-ranked team, and watching it grow under my leadership.
U11 FCV Rockets – The Rockets enjoyed a good 2008 year, winning WAGS matches as well as the FPYC Liberty Cup and Hershey Invitational Tournaments. This team will continue to develop and this U11 age group will become very strong as the club moves forward.
U11 FCV Mad Dogs / U10 FCV Hotspurs / U9 FCV Pride – These three FCV teams all had a good 2008 and continue to learn the game and improve. Like all younger age group teams, they are focusing heavily on skill fundamentals, and ball control and movement. Each team will continue to grow, resulting in progress on the field. The U9 FCV Pride enjoyed marked improvement over the course of the Fall 2008 season, finishing strong and earning its first Tournament Championship at the Hunt Fall Classic!
Congratulations to all of these teams, players, coaches, and families for making 2008 the best year yet for FCV.
As you can see, we have great momentum at FCV for establishing a clear road ahead and achieving our stated goals. Despite being in business less than four complete years, the club, through your support, is recognized and respected around the Region and country for its direction and accomplishments, including the selection in the Red Bull League, its success in regional and national tournament play, the very high number of FCV players going on to play college soccer, the quality of the club’s coaching and training staff, the vision and honesty of its leadership, and the integrity of the club's decision-making. Together with you, I look forward to many, many more years of excitement, sports development, and business success.
Sincerely,
Terry Foley
