FC Virginia Alumni shine in 2008 college soccer season

Jan 10, 2009
With many former FC Virginia players seeing plenty of playing time during their 2008 college soccer season, three in particular were major fixtures on Division I teams, earning conference and national recognition in the process.

Megan Lenczyk, University of Virginia

The former Langley High School and FC Virginia stand out Megan Lenczyk had a break out sophomore year for the University of Virginia in 2008, following a solid freshmen outing in 2007 finishing third on the team in goals with six.

Lenczyk, a former NSCAA All-American and 2007 Player of the year in Virginia, got off to a flying start in 2008, scoring four goals and providing an assist in her first three games, all off the substitute’s bench. Leading the team in scoring after just four games, Lenczyk was rewarded with her first start, which came against Auburn University. She didn’t add to her scoring total in that match, but lead the team in shots on goal in her 74 minutes of field time.

Scoring at a regular clip throughout the season, she was also one of a very few college players anywhere in 2008 to score on eventual National Champion University of North Carolina, registering her team’s only goal in a 5-1 loss.

By season’s end, the impressive front-runner started 16 out of 23 games, making appearances in every match. Season highlights included a hat-trick (3 goals in one game) against Liberty University in the second game of the season, as well as earning both conference and national “Player of the Week” honors. She earned ACC Co-player of the week on September 30th after scoring two game winning goals in two games against none other than Florida State and the University of Miami, ranked 8th and 25th in the country respectively at the time. The same performance also earned the national honor of Soccer America Player Of The Week.

Lenczyk ended the year leading one of the top women’s programs in the country in goals, shots, shots on goal, and game winning goals – all coming in at just ninth on the team in total minutes played.

Laurel Pastor, Virginia Commonwealth University

After just two seasons with VCU, the Springfield High soccer and track star who played club soccer for the FC Virginia Rockets already ranks in the top-20 in school history in both total points (25) and goals (11).

Pastor became a regular starter with Rams late in her freshmen year and hasn’t looked back, earning CAA All-Freshmen team honors in 2007 while scoring two goals and providing a single assist. In 2008 she lead the team in nearly every statistical category with nine goals, 20 points, 51 shots, 23 shots on goal and four game winning goals all tops for the Rams.

A personal season highlight for Pastor came on a three-goal weekend in early October. After scoring the lone goal of the game on a Friday against Drexel to notch the Rams’ win, she followed the performance just two days later scoring both goals in an overtime victory over Delaware. The two-game performance earned the former Rocket CAA Co-Player Of The Week honors.

Although the Rams missed the post-season for the first time in 14 years, a consolation for Pastor and three of her teammates was being named to the All-CAA First Team. In a team that loses nine seniors going into 2009, Pastor will no doubt be counted to continue accumulating stats and accolades if the Rams are to get back to the CAA post season.

Kelly O’Connor, University of Arkansas

After leading the Razorbacks in scoring her freshman year despite missing the final eight game of the season to an ACL injury, the industrious midfielder with a nose for goal once again found herself near the top of the scoring sheet. Having successfully recovered from her ACL injury back on October 5, 2007, the Arkansas native who commuted by plane to play for FC Virginia finished her 2008 season injury free second on the team in goals with five, and second in points with 12.

O’Connor was selected as the SEC Offensive Player of the Week on September 9, 2008 when she posted two goals and an assist over the previous weekend as Arkansas competed in the 2008 adidas Gamecock Classic in Jacksonville, Alabama. She is just the second player in team history to receive the honor.

After jumping out to a 9-1 season opening record, the Razorbacks season ended without post season after a 3-1 loss to LSU, despite setting program records for both conference wins with four, and overall victories with 11. Their coach of five years – Gordon Henderson – resigned in late November, with his replacement – Erin Aubry – named just before Christmas.
