FC Virginia girls teams on a roll in Virginia State Cup
Oct 6, 2008
Four out of five FC Virginia teams participating in the Fall 2008 Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA) State Cup competition won their games this past weekend; with the only losing team falling to four-time defending girls champion BRYC Azul.
In a rematch of the U12 and U13 finals, and U15 semifinals, BRYC and FCV Explosion (formerly Loudoun Explosion) battled in one of their most competitive games yet in round two of the U16 girls division. The game could have gone either way, but it was the Azul who scored first. The 1-0 score line stayed in tact, until injury time in the second half, when Braddock Road got a break away goal on a counter-attack while the Explosion had been pushing everyone forward for an equalizer.
Also in the U16 division, FCV Courage 92 needed overtime and penalty kicks to down Loudoun United and reach the quarterfinal round. The Courage scored in the first half on a header by Tally Sternberg off a corner kick by Carly Hafner. FCV had numerous other chances to score and maintained much of the possession. Imani Clayton was terrific in goal. While the Courage was trying to score again late in the second half, Loudoun dramatically evened the score on a breakaway with one-minute left. After two scoreless overtime periods, the Courage won the game penalty kicks, with Steph Burns, Tally Sternberg, Amy Driessen, Carly Hafner and Lizzy Belair all converting, and a save in goal by Imani Clayton clinching the match.
Head Coach Terry Foley praised the girls by saying, "After giving up a late goal, the Courage showed a lot of character in Overtime by pressing first to last whistle and eventually winning the game on the 6th PK".
In a game not quite as close, the U18 FCV Netforce hosted the SOCA Storm for their round of eight state cup playoff game and from whistle to whistle put on a dazzling display of possession soccer. Spreading out and utilizing the entire field, the Netforce had the Storm chasing from sideline to sideline. The Netforce distributed the ball with precision resulting in six different players finding the back of the net, some twice, for a final result of 8-0.
The U15 FCV Synergy also registered a win in their second round match up against VISTA Omni to advance to the quarterfinals. Goals by Alex Gogolin and Lindsey Heigh lead the way, setting up a critical match against second seeded BRYC Santos.
Finally, the VISTA Fury – who will be representing FC Virginia in the Red Bull National Girls League later this year - advanced in U17 action, downing ABGC X-treme by a score of 2-1. Brittany Bonanzo and Kelly Clark had the Fury goals, while goalkeeper Lauren Jacuska made several outstanding saves in goal.
Overall, FC Virginia teams are an impressive 7-and-1 with 19 goals scored and just five allowed in the 2008-09 edition of the competition.
