FC Virginia teams win Memorial Day tournaments
May 27, 2008
It was a busy Memorial Day weekend for FC Virginia, as every team saw action in tournaments throughout the region. Four FCV teams won tournament championships - scoring a combined 41 goals for while only allowing four against.
Championships:
The U19 Cardinals played together for the first time this weekend and defeated the U19 New York West state champs 1-0 in the finals of the Columbia Memorial Day Tournament. Marika Gray scored with the assist from Cate Tisinger and Kellsey Billups. The Cardinals went 3-0 in group play scoring 7 goals and allowing 2. Next up for the 19’s is the Virginia Youth Soccer Association state cup final on June 8.
The U14 Synergy were also in action at the Columbia Memorial Day Tournament, and also took the championship by defeating the Freestate Fury 1-0 in the finals with a goal by Imani Ervins and assist by Ashley Carmean and Bridget Bergquist. The team went 1-0-2 in group play and allowed only 1 goal the whole weekend.
The U13 Courage traveled to Williamsburg for the Jamestown Cup and found themselves matched up in a lesser than expected level of competition overall, but thrilled with the facilities at the Warhill Sports Complex - complete with seven new synthetic turf fields. Twelve different players combined throughout the weekend to score 23 goals in four games, while solid defensive play and goalkeeping limited opponents to only a few shots on goal, with none allowed. The highlight of the weekend was Cassie Smith's opening goal in the championship match - scoring in just 11 seconds after intercepting the opponent's back pass, beating a surprised central defender, and calmly finishing in the side netting from 15 yards. The Chesapeake United side nearly pulled level minutes later, hitting the post and knocking a rebound towards goal that Alicia Giezen cleared from the line to preserve the lead. Two more first half goals and one for insurance in the 2nd sealed the second tournament championship in two tries for the Courage in the spring season.
The U9 Hotspurs rolled over their competition in the Bull Run Tournament over Memorial Day Weekend. They fought hard to win all four games. Both the defense and offense were on fire. The girls were thrilled to win their first championship as a team.
Other Results:
The U17 Netforce narrowly missed the PDA College Showcase championship after going 3-1-0. They downed Mount Laurel United, Rochester Jr. Rhinos, and Seacoast United Premier, but could could not get past Albertson Fury.
The U15 Courage missed out on a championship final by just one point after going 2-0-1 at the Columbia Invitational. They downed Freestate Explosion and Bayport Power by 1-0 scores, but lost by the same score to TSF Academy.
