The ECNL / id2 Player Development Programs will provide an opportunity for the top players within every ECNL Conference at the 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996 age groups to play with and against the best players within their region at multiple age groups, and to attend presentations from leading coaches or experts in elite athlete development. The ECNL / id2 Player Development Programs have been created with three primary goals: (i) identify the top players within each ECNL conference at multiple age groups; (ii) provide a developmental experience; and (iii) recognize and reward individual performance and achievement.

Players are selected for the ECNL / id2 Player Development Programs based on their performance in ECNL competitions and recommendations from coaches. Each Player Development Program will occur over two days and will include three training sessions/matches and a presentation for the players. Upwards of 300 college coaches were in attendance, offering players the opportunity to play in front of college scouts against the best teams in the country. As a club, FC Virginia collected 3 wins, 3 draws, and 6 losses over the course of the 3 day event.

In addition, during the first two days of the event, ECNL Player Identification Program Scouts were on hand to scout almost 100 ECNL games, during which players were evaluated in their regular team environment against top-level opponents. ECNL Scouts objectively evaluate players for consideration in either the 2011-2012 ECNL Conference Combines or the 2011-2012 ECNL / id2 National Training Camp. The ECNL Player Identificsation Program is designed to provide a process to identify players for consideration in youth national teams that does not add additional financial and time burdens on elite players.

The following schools were represented at the Sanford National Event:

Alderson-Broaddus College
American University
Appalachian State University
Armstrong Atlantic State University
Auburn University Montgomery
Barry Univsity
Barton College
Baylor
Binghamton University
Birmingham-Southern College
Boston University
Bowdoin College
Brandeis University
Bryant University
Bucknell University
California Berkeley
Campbell University
Carleton College
Carnegie Mellon University
Carson-Newman College
Central Michigan University
Clayton State University
Stafford
CMU
Coastal Carolina University
Coker College
Colgate University
College of Charleston
College of Saint Rose
College of the Holy Cross
Columbia University
Columbus State University
Connecticut College
Davidson College
Drexel University
Drury University
Duke University
East Carolina Univeristy
Eastern Washington University
Emory University
Fairfield University
FIU
Florida Gulf Coast University
Francis Marion University
Gardner-Webb University
George Mason University
Georgia College
Georgia College and State Universtiy
Georgia Gwinnett
Georgia State University
Goshen College
High Point University
Hofstra University
Houston Baptist University
Howard University
Indiana University
Iowa State University
Jacksonville State University
James Madison University
Kennesaw State University
LaGrange College
Lawrence University
Lehigh University
Lenoir-Rhyne University
Liberty University
Lincoln Memorial University
Loyola Maryland
Macalester College
Manhattan College
Marist College
Marquette University
Marshall University
McGill University
Mercer University
Meredith College
Miami University
michigan state university
Middle Tennessee State
Middle Tennessee State University
Middlebury College
Minnesota State University Moorhead
Mississippi State University
Navy
New Jersey institute of Technology
North Dakota State University
Northern Kentucky University
Oakland University
Old Dominion University
Post University
Princeton University
Queens University of Charlotte
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Rhodes College
Rice University
Rider University
Rollins College
Rutgers University
Saint Joseph’s University
Saint Leo University
Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota
Sam Houston State
Savannah College of Art and Design
Seton Hall University
Slippery Rock University
Southern Methodist University
St. Bonaventure University
St. John’s University
Stephen F.
FC Virginia U14 Visits Bermuda

FC Virginia U14 team traveled to Bermuda over Easter weekend for a tournament with the Florida Fusion high school team, and most notably, the Bermuda Women’s National Team. For many of the players, the trip was their first travel experience outside of the U.S. requiring passports. The excitement was building as the team assembled at BWI Airport in Baltimore and awaited their departure. Some were nervous as they were not accustomed to air travel while others were calm as ever. As the plane took off, the team settled in for the journey ahead.

The FC Virginia U14 squad was formed just about two years ago with many of the girls having long soccer and friendship bonds dating as far back as U6 and U7. Their deep-rooted friendships on and off the pitch has helped create a team cohesiveness that is unparalleled on most elite youth soccer teams. With these girls, the whole of the team seems greater than the sum of their parts on and off the pitch. As they take a break from their hectic ECNL league schedule, the girls welcome this unique opportunity to travel to Bermuda -- located the North Atlantic Ocean about 640 miles west-north west of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Life’s memorable moments are calling for them as the plane approaches the runway in Bermuda.

The plane has landed and the team finds themselves exiting the plane on a long downward staircase to the tarmac. The girls can get an instant sense for the island weather as the wind gusts and instant smiles emerge as the Bermuda sun warms their faces. After a 20-minute taxi ride the team arrives at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Resort.

The team tours the resort followed by a walk in the town of Hamilton. The sense of island life seems to grab the girls and they are energized by their environment. Next is a team dinner at a local Italian eatery. By the end of dinner the girls are ready for bed as their faces show the long but adventurous day. It is time to hit the sack for much needed rest before they play the Bermuda Women’s National Team in the morning.

The morning is welcomed with an endless breakfast buffet. The girls consume nutrients needed to support them for their upcoming game. After finishing they board the "party" bus for a short ride to the stadium. The island life and atmosphere is prevalent as our bus driver, who is also a police officer and coach in Bermuda, cranks up the tunes for the girls. The players sing their hearts out all the way to the stadium.

Nervous jitters seem to overwhelm the girls as they prepare to play the Bermuda Women’s National Team. The uneasiness spills over early into the game when FC Virginia fall behind 1-0 on a faulty offside trap. They respond under extremely windy conditions with a goal off an extremely well-placed corner kick by Allison Maliska "Gator" that seems to give the Bermuda no other option but to produce an own goal. FC Virginia now has the game tied up 1-1. The Bermuda National team responds before halftime taking advantage of another poor offside trap and goes up 2-1.

At halftime, FC Virginia regroups and the nerves settle. FC Virginia ties the game with an impressive penetrating run though the Bermuda defense by Gabriella Gordon resulting in her quality finish making the game 2-2. The game battles back and forth until FC Virginia’s center back, Kelsey Hamer, sends a quality, lofty diagonal cross over Bermuda’s defending left back to a well-positioned Gabriella Gordon, resulting in a Bermuda defensive handball in the box. Coach Christian Cziommer instructs Gabriella Gordon to take the PK. Gabriella calmly places the ball in the left corner. FC Virginia leads the game 3-2. The battle between the teams continues, but the scoring spree ends as the FC Virginia team shakes its nervousness and ends up victorious, 3-2, over the Bermuda Women’s National Team.

After lunch is provided by the Bermudians at the stadium, the team boards the party bus and prepares for an exciting adventure to Bermuda’s famous Horseshoe Bay. Taking local bus transportation to Horseshoe Bay makes for an exciting scenic tour of the island and even more interesting and fun banter with the Bermudian locals that shared our bus ride.

Upon arrival at Horseshoe Bay, we were stunned by the beauty of this special place. On top of that, the island was celebrating its National Kite Festival and the combination of the festival and island bands in concert made it even more of a special event for the girls. Between climbing the rocky coastal terrain and wading in the incredible blue waters, the team seems to soak in the environment. The unity of the FC Virginia team is quickly recognized by a local TV news camera crew who approach them. The camera crew recruits the girls to do a 15 second TV spot announcing the Bermuda Kite Festival. What a fun way to end their second day in the beautiful islands of Bermuda.

The next morning became more routine for the girls through the breakfast buffet and the party bus ride to the stadium. This day the team prepares for a match against the Florida Fusion high school team. The team possession play picked up and the team went up early with a nice quality back door finish by Kasia Kwitnieski off of a corner kick by Allison Maliska. Moments later, however, FC Virginia gave up a similar back door play which neutralized the game, 1-1. FC Virginia was presented with numerous other chances to take the lead but the game ends in a 1-1 draw.

FC Virginia spent the remainder of the day enjoying the pool and other activities that the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Resort has to offer. The evening excitement was centered on the soccer banquet put on for all the participating teams. It was also the fifth anniversary of the organization so a more elevated celebration was put forth into the evening. The team celebrated their participation in the event along with the special anniversary which included a delicious buffet and not to mention an incredible desert table. As the evening was coming to a close, the girls easily retired to their rooms to get much needed rest for their third and final game in the morning.

The final morning in Bermuda found the team making the usual track out to the stadium with the girl’s favorite bus driver cranking the tunes for the sing-along ride. The girls are having a great time on the island but you can tell by their tired eyes that that they will have to dig deep for the final game. Being the only team in the tourney to play three back-to-back games, it was apparent that they will need to be on their game during the final match.

The last match for FC Virginia is again against the Bermuda Women’s National Team. The two match up well in style of play where both teams look for a controlled possession game. Shortly into the first half Bermuda finds the back of the net on an unmarked center mid finish after FC Virginia fails to clear the ball out of the crowded box. Playing a senior team like Bermuda will make you pay when you have indecisive decisions. Trying to neutralize the game, FC Virginia spends the remainder of the game attempting to penetrate the Bermuda defense. FC Virginia created numerous opportunities but to no avail. Bermuda wins 1-0. It is an impressive showing by the U14 FC Virginia team throughout the tournament and they walk away from the weekend proud of their play on the pitch.

The team piles back into the party bus and the island life and the singing permeates throughout the team. The girls are in a good place and they are making the most of their time here in paradise. For the parents that made the trip, they are fondly soaking in the experience with a "don’t worry, be happy" attitude. They have witnessed an extraordinary talented group of girls show an abundance of character and love for each other and even more impressively off the pitch throughout the weekend. The girls are truly blessed on this Easter Sunday to share it with each other. The parents are just happy to be along for the ride.

As the plane carrying the team catches air nearing the end of the runway, the team looks out the aircraft windows and says goodbye to Bermuda. The Bermuda Island is now a distant spec in the window but lifelong memories are forever engrained in each of the girl’s mind. The special time on the Bermuda Islands is well deserved for such a special and unique group of girls.

FC Virginia's U16 ECNL team ammassed an impressive 8-0-4 record, scoring 20 goals over 12 games, during the year in the A Flight of their age bracket. Their record has them placed 7th among the top teams in the nation. This ranking has also earned them the right to compete for the National Championship against the top 8 teams of the U16 A bracket.

The U17 team also had a very successful year in Flight B. Their record over 12 games throughout the year was 6-3-3 and they scored 25 goals over the course of the year against stiff competition. They currently sit in 6th place and are fighting for the opportunity to be promoted to the A flight for the 2011-2012 season.

FC Virginia's U15 team has a considerable amount to play for over the weekend as how they finish will determine the clubs bracket placement for next year. So the Rising U15 and U14 teams will certainly be paying close attention to the U15's results this weekend.

The ECNL National Championship, which kicks off on Thurs., July 14, features 164 of the country’s top female youth soccer teams in what is one of the most prestigious events of the year.

“Having one of the national championship games broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN3 is an incredibly exciting step for the ECNL,” said President Christian Lavers. “We are excited to be able to show the soccer world the quality of play within the ECNL and to share the goals and mission of the ECNL with a broad audience. With the Women’s World Cup Final being played the same weekend, this will be a unique opportunity for people to see the best youth soccer in the United States at the same time that, hopefully, the U.S. Women’s National Team is raising the World Cup trophy.”

Launched in 2005, ESPNU is a multimedia college sports brand, highlighted by a 24-hour television network and website – ESPNU.com. ESPNU is available nationwide in approximately 73 million households and has long-term carriage agreements with all 10 of the top multichannel TV providers – Cablevision, Charter, Comcast, Cox, DirecTV (Channel 208), DISH Network (Channel 141), Mediacom, Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS TV and AT&T U-verse.

ESPN3 is a broadband network for live sports programming that harnesses the quality ESPN has built through its TV networks and delivers online sports programming to fans through a rich, interactive and easy-to-use experience. ESPN3 broadcasts thousands of live games and events online each year.

“The ECNL National Championship is the goal shared by every team in the ECNL at the beginning of the year,” said ECNL Vice President Doug Bracken. “Having the chance to achieve that goal on a national stage, with all the additional excitement of a televised game, should be an experience that the players never forget.”

Participating teams will compete for age group national championships, promotion and relegation between the "A" and "B" flights in each age group for the 2011-12 season, and an overall ECNL National Club Champion.

All 52 current ECNL member clubs will be featured at the event, with each team assigned to a playoff group based upon its position in the final regular-season standings. Each team will play three games over three days.

Adding to the festive environment of the ECNL National Championship at Aurora Sports Complex will be the on-site presence of Nike, Eurosport, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Jamba Juice.

“One of the primary goals of the ECNL is to improve the daily player experience, both on and off the field,” said ECNL Commissioner Sarah Kate Noftsinger. “We hope that the ECNL National Championship, with the presence of ESPN, Nike, and so many other partners, will create a rare atmosphere.”

The ECNL is sanctioned by US Club Soccer and sponsored by Nike.

has worked with SYA’s academy program for the last 15 years, and has had a long-term relationship with the club. "The club clearly is going through a growth period," said Ellis. "SYA has a good reputation out in the soccer community, and we’re getting huge numbers of kids trying out. We’re moving to VCCL, and we have a good relationship with ECNL. Part of me coming in is to restructure what the club is doing so we can spend more time in each program."

Ellis said that he will be continuing to work with Rob Olsen, Director of Coaching House League, Christian Cziommer, Director of Operations, and Dean McAlpin, Director of Player Development, to focus on developing age-specific curriculums designed around Claudio Reyna’s U.S. Soccer curriculum, as well as focusing on more coaching education for the club’s staff.

"I’m really looking forward to trying to get the club to a higher level," said Ellis. "I already feel it’s one of the premier clubs in Virginia, but I want it to continue to grow so it becomes a nationally recognized club. I’d like to get the boys in the ASL, and the girls in the ECNL, and to strive to play in the top level leagues. We have to take baby steps, though, especially on the boys side, and the VCCL will help. As the boys side gets older, who knows. We may be able to get an academy program going in a few years. I’m really looking forward to seeing where we can push this club.

Ellis has a strong coaching resume having coached at George Mason University as well as State and Regional Olympic Development Teams. He was the Head Scout for the US Women’s National Team at the Athens Olympics and has coached youth teams to seven Virginia State Titles, 3 Region one championships and one National Championship.

Coach Ellis holds an “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation as well as an NCSAA Premier Diploma.

"The soccer board of directors within SYA have been very visionary over the years, and this is another step in their recognition that the club will continue to grow.
D.C. United now boasts a women’s team that will compete in the W-League and they selected FC Virginia coach, Mike Jorden, to lead the new women’s team in its inaugural season.

"Mike is one of the best coaches in the region, with a long track record of success in developing female players as well as winning," said D.C. United Women General Manager Tim Schweitzer. "He brings the perfect combination of coaching ability and the relationships with top programs that we need to quickly build a highly competitive team. We couldn’t be happier to have him on board, and the team building has already moved into high gear."

Jorden, a 10-time Virginia state cup champion coach, said he’s excited to take the helm of the W-League team. "This is a fantastic opportunity for me to work with a great group of people," said Jorden, "Tim and everyone in the front office at D.C. United Women are all first class. We have a lot of work to do in a short time frame and I am looking forward to the challenge."

Jorden is an accomplished coach who has two U.S. Youth Soccer Region I titles - in 2003 and in 2009 - and has captured Virginia state titles in every age group the competition is held.

The D.C. United Women will draw players from a large pool of elite college standouts and former professionals. With numerous veteran stars and top collegiate programs in the Washington metro area, expectations will be high when United takes the field this summer.

Jorden, who was also affiliated with Virginia’s Olympic Development Program for 10 years, said he wouldn’t be surprised to one day coach his former youth players. "The idea of re-connecting with some of my former players and building relationships with new ones is extremely exciting," he said.

The D.C. United Women fill the vacancy left by the departure of the Washington Freedom Futures and will play their home matches at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. Also the former home of the WPS Washington Freedom, the SoccerPlex is an ideal showcase for women’s minor league soccer in the D.C. metropolitan area. They will face a challenging slate of opponents in the Northeast Division this season, including notable W-League mainstays New York Magic and Long Island Rough Riders. United Women will kick off its home season on Thursday, June 9th with a match against the 2005 W-League Champions, New Jersey Wildcats.
